Although gold is found all over the world, its concentrations vary greatly by area. There is almost no gold in Europe that is economically viable to extract. A lot of gold is found in North America, Australia, Russia, China, Indonesia and in various South American countries. On the African continent, South Africa has produced by far the most gold.
The gold mines there are slowly starting to be depleted, while production in other African countries such as Ghana and Burkina Faso is being ramped up. At the moment, China has the largest gold production, in 2022 the mines in this country extracted about 330 tons of gold from the ground. Historically, most of the gold has been mined in South Africa, hence the popularity of the golden Krugerrand.
