Figures from the US Geological Survey show that 3,100 tonnes of gold were extracted from the ground worldwide in 2022. The largest gold producers were China (330 tonnes), Australia (320 tonnes), Russia (320 tonnes), Canada (220 tonnes) and the United States (170 tonnes). Until the beginning of this century, South Africa was still the largest producer of gold in the world, but due to the depletion of the mines there and the rise of the gold mining industry in other countries, South Africa has dropped to eighth place with a production of (110 tons). The following image shows that South Africa played an important role in the production of gold over the past 100 years. Before that time, a lot of gold came from the American continent, think of the gold rush in California, for example.
