Frequently Asked Questions
How does Holland Gold determine the buyback price of gold, silver, platinum and palladium?

Holland Gold calculates the buyback price of precious metals based on the fine weight, the current spot price and the buyback premium. This applies to gold, silver, platinum and palladium. For a direct valuation of your precious metals, please visit our pages about selling gold, selling silver and selling platinum and palladium, or contact us by phone on +31 88 468 8400, Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00.

The current buyback price consists of 3 fixed elements:

Buyback price = fine weight × (spot price ± premium) - processing costs

  1. Fine weight
Fine weight is the net weight of pure precious metal in the bar or coin that you sell to us. For example, the gold bars sold by Holland Gold consist of 99.99% pure gold, while historical coins often have a lower purity. Historical Dutch silver coinage, for example, has a silver content of only 72%, meaning that one gross kilogram contains only 720 grams of fine silver.
  2. Current spot price
The spot price is the real-time market price. For this, we refer you to our pages showing the gold price, silver price, platinum price or palladium price. This price moves continuously during trading hours. On our website, you can see the current prices and a timer indicating when the price will be updated.
  3. The buyback premium
The buyback premium is the percentage that we offer above or below spot. This percentage differs per product and depends, among other things, on tradability, supply and demand, and processing costs.

Which product characteristics affect the buyback price of gold, silver, platinum and palladium?

Holland Gold also buys gold, silver, platinum and palladium that was not originally purchased from us. However, not every bar or coin is of the same quality. The following product characteristics can affect the buyback price.

  1. LBMA/LPPM accreditation
The LBMA Good Delivery List and the LPPM Good Delivery List are lists of internationally recognised refineries that meet the requirements of the London Bullion Market Association and the London Platinum and Palladium Market respectively. For gold and silver bars, we look at LBMA accreditation. For platinum and palladium bars, we look at LPPM accreditation. Bars from accredited refineries are bought by us at standardised premiums. For bars from non-accredited refineries, we may offer a lower price.
  2. Bars and coins from non-LBMA/LPPM refineries
Some non-LBMA producers are widely accepted in the Dutch market, while other producers are less liquid. Bars from Drijfhout are accepted by us at favourable rates. Bars from the Belgian producer Tony Goetz, on the other hand, are bought at the lower non-LBMA rate. Platinum or palladium bars from non-LPPM producers are accepted at a reduced rate.
  3. Different purity or weight
Some bars have a lower purity, for example 995/1000 instead of 999/1000. These bars contain less fine precious metal than standard products. The buyback price is then adjusted based on the actual fine weight.
  4. Wear on coins
Wear is especially common in historical coins, such as Dutch gold ten-guilder coins. When these have been worn as jewellery in a pendant, they can lose weight through contact with clothing or skin. If the weight has decreased significantly, for example by 0.05 grams or more, the buyback price is adjusted proportionally.
  5. Tradability of the product
Investment coins made of silver, platinum and palladium are often bought back above the spot price under normal market conditions. This premium is variable and depends on current market conditions, saleability and costs for dealers. Changes to VAT rules for newly minted coins can also affect pricing.

Why does a lower price apply to non-LBMA/LPPM or worn products?

For less liquid or worn products, precious metals dealers may offer a lower price because these products cannot always be resold as investment products. They may first need to be melted down or analysed.

Refineries charge melting and assay costs for this. With a transparent dealer, these types of price adjustments usually amount to only a few percent.
