Many central banks are working on their own digital currencies, the so-called Central Bank Digital Currencies. Such a currency already exists in the Bahamas, while China is already experimenting with it on a large scale. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has also been talking about it lately written. However, much is still unclear. What role will this new digital money play exactly? And will it make cash or even regular payments via banks obsolete?
In This episode of the cryptocast, presenter Herbert Blankesteijn talks to Paul Buitink (known from the deposit bank) and Martijn Jeroen van der Linden (lecturer in New Finance at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and chairman of the Ons Geld foundation) about this new trend. Are CBDCs the money of the future? Or will central banks lose out to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum? Click here for the video and here for the podcast.
