Theo Wolters on huge loss of purchasing power in the euro and monetary welfare optimisation as a solution

In this episode, Paul Buitink talks to Theo Wolters about the costs of membership of the eurozone, the loss of purchasing power of Dutch citizens as a result of the use of the euro and monetary welfare optimisation as a solution. Theo is an independent researcher and founder of the Environment, Science and Policy Foundation. Paul and Theo first elaborate on the costs we have incurred as a result of membership of the EU and the euro.

Theo also shows the loss of purchasing power caused by the introduction of the euro. Theo substantiates this with graphs from his research that are shown in the video. According to Theo, the Netherlands benefits more from having an independent currency than a currency union. He substantiates this thesis with his solution called the "Monetary Welfare Optimization". However, Theo does not think leaving the euro is a good idea. He proposes to make the euro more flexible and how this can serve as a peaceful solution to the current euro problems.
