This spring, two detector seekers discovered the largest coin hoard ever from the 6th century in the Netherlands in Drenthe. The Drents Museum has ensured that the museum in Assen has acquired the gold treasure. The new acquisition is seen as a great addition to the archaeological collection.

It concerns forty-seven gold coins from the Early Middle Ages, each weighing more than 4 grams. The discovered gold coin hoard is diverse in composition, the majority of the coins are Byzantine. Other coins have been minted in Constantinople and Rome, among other places.

The Dutch Central Bank has indicated that in terms of weight, it is the largest coin hoard ever found in the Netherlands from the 6th century. The youngest coin was minted after 541.

From 20 June, the find can be admired by the public in the Drents museum.
