Design & finish — 1/10 troy ounce Philharmoniker

The Austrian Mint is renowned for its exceptional production quality and purity. The obverse of the Gold Philharmoniker displays its gold purity (999.9), weight (1/10 troy ounce), the face value of 10 euros (pre-2002: 200 schilling) and the iconic organ of the Vienna Musikverein, together with the inscription “Republik Österreich”.

The reverse features the inscription “Wiener Philharmoniker” along with an ensemble of musical instruments: a Viennese horn, a double bass, a harp, a cello and four violins. The timeless design by Thomas Pesendorfer has remained unchanged since the Philharmoniker series debuted in 1989 and has been used for the 1/10 troy ounce coin since 1991. Unlike the silver version, the gold coin has a reeded edge.

Gold offers protection in times of inflation
Gold offers protection in times of inflation
In the long term, gold retains its value, while currencies lose a lot of purchasing power. An example of the value retention of gold is that 2,000 years ago you could buy a tailor-made suit for one gold coin and that is still the case today.

The gold reserves at central banks act as the backing of a money system. According to DNB, gold is an 'anchor of trust': "If the entire financial system collapses, the gold supply provides collateral to start over."

Gold strengthens the portfolio through its long-term returns and diversification. Its traditional role as a safe haven means that gold is an asset in times of crisis, moving in the opposite direction to the rest of the portfolio.
