We are entering an era of Slowbalization globalisation will slow down and more people will return from the city to the countryside. The economic centre of gravity will also shift from the Western world to Asia. That's what trend watcher Adjiedj Bakas says in conversation with Paul Buitink and Joris Beemsterboer of Holland Gold. These changes will be accompanied by an era of chaos, as he also describes in his latest book.
According to Bakas, the first signs of this economic power shift are already visible. He mentions, for example, climate policy in the Western world, which, according to the trend watcher, has become completely detached from reality. The war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia have shown that our economy cannot function without oil and gas and that the energy transition is an illusion. According to Bakas, climate policy is indicative of a Europe that is at the height of its power, because the policy is no longer connected to economic reality.
After an era of prosperity and abundance, we must now prepare for an era of scarcity, according to the trend watcher. That means we need to be more creative with the resources we have and innovate more. But also that we need to critically examine the decadent climate policy and nitrogen policy of recent years. However, these times also offer opportunities. For example, Bakas is positive about investing in emerging economies and new technological innovations.
