Krugerrand buy
Buying a Krugerrand is an investment in a highly reputable gold investment coin. Worldwide, 48 million troy ounces worth of newly minted Krugerrands have been sold. This means that there are more Krugerrands in circulation internationally than of any gold coin. The Krugerrand is known as the classic in gold.
The gold alloy of the Krugerrand
The Krugerrand's characteristic reddish color is caused by the copper content in the gold alloy. The alloy consists of 916.67/1000 gold and 83.33/1000 copper. The alloy, in addition to the legendary "red glow", makes for a relatively scratch-resistant coin.
Due to the gold alloy used, the coin is heavier than a gold 1 troy ounce coin that consists of 999.9 fine gold. The 1 oz Krugerrand weighs exactly 33.9305 grams. Both coins, despite the difference in weight, contain a full ounce of fine gold.
Where does the name come from?
The name is derived from the two words Kruger and the edge. Paul Kruger, former president, lived in 1825 - 1904. He was a South African politician and military commander in the Boer War, a war of independence from the British. Among white South Africans, he was affectionately known as "Uncle Paul". Rand is the name of the South African currency and also the abbreviation for the Witwatersrand, a very gold-rich area in the former Transvaal province. Most of the gold used for the gold coins comes from the Witwatersrand area. So this name is anything but a coincidence.
