Krugerrand 1 troy ounce gold coin - various years

The gold Krugerrand is the world’s oldest and most famous official bullion coin. It contains 31.1 grams, or one troy ounce, of gold. The total weight is slightly higher at 33.93 grams, as 2.8 grams of copper are added. This makes the coin 22 carats, giving it its characteristic reddish-golden color.

Since the Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of gold, its value is equivalent to that of other one-ounce gold coins such as the Maple Leaf. Many investors prefer the Krugerrand for its distinctive hue and because it is more resistant to scratches than a pure gold coin.

The Krugerrand is considered the classic gold investment coin and remains one of the most widely traded in the world. Nearly 50 million troy ounces of Krugerrands have been minted, making it the most circulated gold bullion coin globally.

Design: Durable and Globally Recognized

The gold Krugerrand was first issued in 1967 by The South African Mint. Like other investment coins, it contains 31.1 grams (one troy ounce) of fine gold. Due to its gold-copper alloy, it is slightly heavier, weighing exactly 33.9305 grams, with 31.1 grams of gold and 2.8 grams of copper. This alloy not only gives the coin its legendary reddish hue but also makes it stronger and more resistant to wear.

The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic, affectionately known as “Uncle Paul.” Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions “South Africa” and “Suid-Afrika.” The reverse shows the national symbol of South Africa, the springbok antelope, along with the year of issue and the weight of one troy ounce of fine gold. The coin’s reeded edge and detailed design are the work of artists Otto Schulz (obverse) and Coert Steynberg (reverse).

Gold offers protection in times of inflation
Gold offers protection in times of inflation
In the long term, gold retains its value, while currencies lose a lot of purchasing power. An example of the value retention of gold is that 2,000 years ago you could buy a tailor-made suit for one gold coin and that is still the case today.

The gold reserves at central banks act as the backing of a money system. According to DNB, gold is an 'anchor of trust': "If the entire financial system collapses, the gold supply provides collateral to start over."

Gold strengthens the portfolio through its long-term returns and diversification. Its traditional role as a safe haven means that gold is an asset in times of crisis, moving in the opposite direction to the rest of the portfolio.
