The 10 Dollar Liberty Head Gold Eagle, also known as the Coronet Head, is a classic American gold coin with a rich history. The coin was struck in 0.900 fine gold (21.6 carat) and contains 15.05 grams (0.484 troy ounce) of pure gold. This makes the coin an appealing historical alternative to modern half-ounce bullion coins.
The total weight is 16.72 grams, with a diameter of approximately 27 mm. The coin was issued as legal tender and actively circulated in the United States from 1838 through 1907. The examples offered originate from various years within this period and may show visible signs of circulation.
The coin originally carried a face value of 10 US dollars (USD). Today, its value is naturally significantly higher, driven by its gold content and historical importance. In the early 20th century, the Liberty Head Gold Eagle was succeeded by the Indian Head Gold Eagle, which retained the same gold weight but introduced an entirely new design.
The 10 Dollar Liberty Head Gold Eagle features a design that remained largely unchanged throughout its entire mintage period. The obverse displays a portrait of Lady Liberty, created by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty wears a crown bearing the word LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original states of the United States. The date appears at the bottom.
The coin is commonly referred to as the “Liberty Head” due to this portrait, while the term “Coronet Head” specifically refers to the crown worn by Liberty. This designation is used to distinguish this type from other Liberty designs in American coinage history.
The reverse depicts the American eagle with outstretched wings, a shield on its chest, and arrows and an olive branch held in its talons. Surrounding the design is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination TEN DOLLARS shown below.
Following the American Civil War, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added in 1866 on a ribbon above the eagle. The intention was to morally unify the nation after the war, acknowledge divine protection following a period of immense loss, and emphasize the religious character of the United States. Aside from this addition, the design remained unchanged until the end of the series in 1907.
What makes this coin particularly special is that it circulated before, during, and after the Civil War. As such, the $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle is not only a bullion coin, but also a tangible historical artifact from a defining period in American history.
