The American Eagle 10 dollar coins are minted in 16,718 grams of gold with a content of 900/1000 grams. The coins were minted by U.S. Mint in: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City and Denver. The mintage of the coins varies per year, but they are all relatively high. The coins have a diameter of 27 mm and contain 15.05 grams of fine gold.
The design of the coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht in 1838. From 1838 the coin was minted continuously until 1907. On the obverse of the coin is an image of Lady Liberty looking to the left wearing a crown with the word ''LIBERTY'' written on it. Above the image are 13 stars to represent the original states.
The reverse of the coin depicts an eagle with an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other. On the outer circumference above the eagle is the text ''UNITED STATES OF AMERICA''. Just below the eagle is ''TEN D.'' The mintmarks of the Mints where they are minted: New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), Carson City (CC), or Denver (D) are at the bottom of the image of the eagle. The coins minted in Philadelphia do not bear mint marks.
