The gold 1 troy ounce Panda coin has been minted in China by the Chinese Mint since 1982 and is legal tender here with a value of 500 Yuan. The gold Panda is minted in 1 troy ounce (31.103 grams) of 99.99 pure gold and therefore belongs to the 24 carat gold coins. The coin has a diameter of 32 mm and is 2.7 mm thick.
On the obverse of the gold Panda coins is an image of the ''Temple of Heaven''. This temple is located in Beijing. Above the image is the text "Zhongua Renmin Gongheguo'' which means People's Republic of China. Below the image is the year in which it was minted. The design of the obverse of the Panda coins has never changed.
The reverse side of the Panda coiner changes every year. Only the years 2001 and 2002 bear the same design. The reason that the design was not changed this year was due to the Chinese Mint. They decided not to change the design of the gold Pledge coins from 2001 onwards. Due to a lot of pressure from collectors of the Panda coin, a new design was presented in 2003.
Every year, the Pandabear returns to the design. Next to the image is the size and fineness of the gold content and the face value on the coin each year. Due to its varied design, it is a popular coin among collectors of physical gold. Among investors of physical gold, the gold Panda coins are also popular, because no VAT is charged on the coins.
The gold Panda 1 troy ounce has a lower mintage than the other coins of the other mints. Due to the lower mintage, a higher premium is paid on this coin. As a result, the gold Panda 1 troy ounce is also slightly higher in price than, for example, a gold Maple Leaf.
