The 1897 Queen Wilhelmina Gold Ten Guilder is highly sought after by collectors and is affectionately known as “the girl with the long hair”. Due to its relatively low mintage, this coin holds significant collector’s value in addition to its gold content.
The portrait used on this coin first appeared in 1892, but that year only 61 trial coins were minted. In 1897 the same design was reused, depicting Wilhelmina as a young girl, even though she was already 17 years old at the time. A total of 453,696 gold ten guilder coins were minted in 1897.
The 1897 gold ten guilder coin weighs 6.72 grams, of which 6.048 grams is pure gold (90%, 21.6 karats). The coins were struck by the Royal Mint in Utrecht and are recognised worldwide as reliable gold investment coins.

Wilhelmina became queen at the age of 10 after the death of her father, King Willem III, in 1890. Until she turned 18, her mother, Regent Emma, carried out the royal duties. In 1898, a new design appeared: the 1898 Gold Ten Guilder, known as “Wilhelmina with the crown”. This coin was issued in a relatively limited mintage and also carries substantial collector’s value. We also offer the 1898 edition.
The later Wilhelmina designs, minted between 1911–1915 (with ermine mantle) and 1925–1933 (with pinned-up hair), were produced in the millions. As a result, we can offer these coins — as well as the gold ten guilder coins of King Willem III (1876–1889) — at very competitive prices, ideal for investors looking to maximise their gold holdings.
The obverse shows the portrait of Wilhelmina, designed by W.J. Schammer, as a young girl with long flowing hair, facing left. Above the portrait is the inscription “GOD ZIJ MET ONS” (“God be with us”), and below it “KONINGIN WILHELMINA”. The reverse displays the crowned Dutch coat of arms with the Dutch lion, along with the mintmaster’s mark (the halberd), the year 1897, the Utrecht Mint mark (the caduceus), and the nominal value of 10 guilders.
Gold ten guilder coins were minted from 1812 onward with portraits of Kings Willem I, Willem II, Willem III and Queen Wilhelmina herself. The Wilhelmina issues were produced between 1892 and 1933. The coin weighs 6.72 grams, has a fineness of 21.6 karats, and contains 6.048 grams of pure gold.
The last gold ten guilder coin was issued in 1933. At that time, its face value was 10 guilders (around €4.50). By September 2025, the same coin was worth more than €600. Those who saved in gold ten guilder coins instead of paper money maintained or even increased their purchasing power. This demonstrates that gold preserves value over time. The 1897 issue also benefits from additional collector’s value.
