Golden ducat

The golden ducat has existed since 1586. This coin consists of 23.7 carat gold, or 0.986/1000. The weight of the single ducat is 3,494 grams. This means that this medal contains more than 3.434 grams of fine gold. The ducat has a diameter of 21 mm and is remarkably thin with a thickness of only 0.7 mm. As was customary in the past, these tokens are ideal as an investment and collector's coin. These coins do not have legal tender status, but they are assured of their content and weight.

Until 1808, the gold ducats were minted in various provinces. These medals were then minted in the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht. Between 1824 and 1830, these coins were also minted in Brussels. Millions of ducats have been minted. The 'gold ducate' has a varying edition, which means that some years with a low edition are very popular with collectors.

Design of the Golden Ducat

The obverse of the ducat depicts a standing knight with a sword and a bunch of arrows in his hand. The text on this front is: Parvae Crescunt Concordia Res and the year of the ducat. On the back is a decorated square with the text in a square: MO. AUR. REG. BELGIUM AD LEGEM IMPERII.

Until 1982, every Dutchman could have these ducats minted at the Rijks Munt with a minimum of 10 kg of gold. After 1982 this was no longer possible. Nevertheless, you can buy these historical coins at Holland Gold thanks to our purchasing trading partner. These gold medals are highly sought after due to the combination of historical fame and high purity.

Why buy gold at Holland Gold?

Gold offers protection in times of inflation
Gold offers protection in times of inflation
In the long term, gold retains its value, while currencies lose a lot of purchasing power. An example of the value retention of gold is that 2,000 years ago you could buy a tailor-made suit for one gold coin and that is still the case today.
Gold is an insurance against a systemic risk

The gold reserves at central banks act as the backing of a money system. According to DNB, gold is an 'anchor of trust': "If the entire financial system collapses, the gold supply provides collateral to start over."
Gold is a mainstay in the investment portfolio

Gold strengthens the portfolio through its long-term returns and diversification. Its traditional role as a safe haven means that gold is an asset in times of crisis, moving in the opposite direction to the rest of the portfolio.
