Silver bars
Silver bars are always taxed with 21% VAT in the Netherlands. When silver bars are purchased for business, the VAT can be reclaimed through the company and income tax or corporation tax is calculated on the profit. For business customers, silver bars are the better option over silver coins. If you, as a private individual, still want to buy silver bars without VAT, it is advisable to do this in combination with storage in Switzerland, in which case the silver bars are exempt from VAT.
Silver Coins
For private individuals, the VAT on silver bars cannot be reclaimed, which is why we advise private individuals to buy silver coins. These coins are traded under the margin scheme, which means that the coins are exempt from VAT.
