The 1 troy ounce Silver Philharmonic – Various Years – is produced by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich) and is the most recognized and best-selling European silver investment coin. Introduced in 2008 following the success of its gold counterpart, the coin has become globally renowned for its distinctive design and popularity among investors in countries such as Germany, Switzerland and the United States.
With a purity of 99.9% fine silver, the Philharmonic is highly sought after due to its low premium and competitive price, as it is minted in large quantities. Year after year, it ranks among the world’s best-selling 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) silver coins and remains one of the most popular choices at Holland Gold.
The coin pays tribute to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1842 and regarded as one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, alongside the Berlin Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Its famous organ, featured in the Vienna Musikverein, is depicted on the obverse of the coin.
The various-year coins were acquired through the secondary market and date from 2008 to 2024. Because they are not sourced directly from the mint, these coins are offered at a lower premium than the newest 2025 edition. From an investment perspective, all Philharmonic silver coins have the same resale value regardless of the year of issue.
In addition, these coins are exempt from 21% VAT. As they have previously been in circulation and are carefully sourced from private and institutional sellers, you benefit from a more favorable price while owning a globally recognized coin with strong liquidity.
The Austrian Mint is known for its exceptional production quality and precision. The obverse of the Silver Philharmonic displays the weight (1 troy ounce), face value of €1.50, the iconic organ of the Vienna Philharmonic and the inscription ‘Republik Österreich’. The reverse features the text ‘Wiener Philharmoniker’ and a selection of classical instruments: a Vienna horn, bassoon, harp, cello and four violins. The design by Thomas Pesendorfer dates back to 1989 and was originally created for the gold version, later adopted for silver in 2008.
Unlike the gold Philharmonic, the edge of the silver coin is smooth rather than reeded. With a diameter of 37 millimeters, it is slightly thicker and sturdier than most other 1 oz silver coins. Because silver is less dense than gold, the coin is thicker at 3.2 millimeters compared to 2 millimeters for the gold version.
