Design
Thanks to its internationally recognized Maple Leaf design, this platinum coin is easy to trade. The obverse of this silver coin features the portrait of Elizabeth II and her name. This is the Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, two other countries, and the twelve Commonwealth Realms. Also, on the obverse, it is stated the face value of 50 dollars and the year in which the coin was minted.
The reverse of the coin reads: Canada, the purity of 99.95% and the weight of 1 troy ounce of pure platinum. In addition, there are the words: "Fine Platinum / Platinum Pur", which means fine platinum in English and French. Fine platinum is deliberately listed in two languages on the coin due to Canada's bilingualism. There is also a maple leaf on the back, the so-called Maple Leaf. This has been the Canadian symbol since 1700 and represents the representation of Canadian nature. The 11 points that can be found in the magazine have no official significance. But some believe the points refer to the ten provinces and the federal government.
History
In 1988, the first platinum Maple Leaf coin was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Because of the aesthetics that came with the coin, the purity and the RCM expertise, the coin was an instant success. Immediately after this platinum Maple Leaf coin, the variants 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 were also released with various denominations. The 1/20 oz variant was only released in the period from 1993 to 1999. In the years from 2003 to 2009, no platinum Maple Leaf coins were minted. After this period, the coin was reintroduced and is still a common choice of individuals when it comes to platinum.
