The gold Krugerrand is the world’s oldest and most renowned official bullion coin. This one-tenth troy ounce Krugerrand contains 3.11 grams of gold. Its total weight is slightly higher at 3.393 grams due to the addition of 0.28 grams of copper. This composition makes the coin 22 carats, giving it its distinctive reddish-golden hue.
Because the Krugerrand contains exactly one-tenth of a troy ounce of gold, its value is equivalent to that of other 1/10 ounce 24 carat gold coins such as the Maple Leaf. Many investors appreciate the Krugerrand for its unique color and its higher resistance to scratches compared to pure gold coins.
The Krugerrand is regarded as one of the world’s leading gold coins, offering both historical significance and strong liquidity. Considered the classic among gold investment coins, more than 50 million troy ounces of Krugerrands have been minted, making it the most widely circulated gold bullion coin worldwide.
The Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 by The South African Mint. Like other bullion coins, it contains 3.11 grams (one-tenth troy ounce) of fine gold. Due to its gold-copper alloy, the coin is slightly heavier than a 24 carat coin of the same size. The alloy consists of 91.67% gold (916.67/1000) and 8.33% copper. The 1/10 troy ounce Krugerrand weighs exactly 3.393 grams, containing 3.11 grams of gold and 0.28 grams of copper. This alloy not only gives the coin its legendary reddish tone but also provides additional strength and scratch resistance.
The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic, affectionately known among Afrikaners as “Uncle Paul.” Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions “South Africa” and “Suid-Afrika.” The reverse shows the South African springbok, the country’s national symbol, along with the year of issue and the weight of one-tenth troy ounce of fine gold. The coin has a reeded edge. The portrait of Paul Kruger was designed by Otto Schulz, while the reverse featuring the springbok was designed by Coert Steynberg.
