The 1898 Gold Ten Guilder Coin of Queen Wilhelmina is known as the “Wilhelmina with the crown” or the “Coronation Ten” and was minted in the year she officially accepted the crown at the age of eighteen. Although she had been queen since the age of ten, her mother, Regent Emma, carried out royal duties until 1898. To mark the inauguration, a new design featuring the distinctive small crown was issued in a relatively limited mintage. Due to this limited availability, the coin holds a notable collector’s premium in addition to its gold value.
The 1898 ten guilder coin has the same specifications as the other Wilhelmina issues: a total weight of 6.72 grams, containing 6.048 grams of pure gold with a fineness of 21.6 karats (90% pure). It was produced by the Royal Mint in Utrecht, known for its consistent quality and precise manufacturing. Thanks to this reputation, Dutch gold ten guilder coins are regarded worldwide as a safe and reliable investment product.

The 1897 ten guilder coin, issued directly prior to the crown design, still features the classic portrait of Wilhelmina as a young girl with long flowing hair. This design first appeared in 1892 in an extremely small trial mintage of only 61 pieces and was used again in 1897 with a mintage of 453,696 coins. Due to its charming appearance and historical context, the 1897 issue is also highly sought after and available from us.
The later Wilhelmina designs, minted between 1911–1915 (with ermine mantle) and 1925–1933 (with pinned-up hair), were struck in the millions. As a result, we can offer these coins — as well as the ten guilder coins of King Willem III (1876–1889) — at particularly attractive prices, ideal for investors seeking the maximum gold content for their money.
The obverse shows the portrait of Wilhelmina wearing the distinctive small crown (tiara), facing left, designed by J.P.M. Menger. Above the portrait is the inscription “GOD ZIJ MET ONS” (“God be with us”) and below “KONINGIN WILHELMINA”. The reverse features the crowned Dutch coat of arms with the Dutch lion, accompanied by the mintmaster’s mark (the halberd), the year 1898, the Utrecht mintmark (the caduceus), and the nominal value of 10 guilders.
Gold ten guilder coins were minted from 1812 onward with portraits of Kings Willem I, II and III, as well as Queen Wilhelmina. The Wilhelmina issues were produced between 1892 and 1933. The coin weighs 6.72 grams, has a fineness of 21.6 karats and contains 6.048 grams of pure gold.
The last gold ten guilder coin was issued in 1933. At that time its face value was 10 guilders (around €4.50). By September 2025, the same coin was worth more than €600. Those who saved in gold ten guilder coins rather than paper money preserved or even increased their purchasing power. This demonstrates how gold retains its value over time, while the nominal guilder and later the euro lost more than 99% of their purchasing power due to inflation. For the 1898 issue, this is reinforced by its additional collector’s premium.
