Design of the Gold 1/2 troy ounce Britannia

The 1/2 troy ounce Britannia was introduced in 1987 and has remained a popular investment coin ever since. Coins minted between 1987 and 2012 contain 22-karat gold, while coins from 2013 onwards are struck in 24-karat gold. We exclusively offer the 24-karat versions.

The design by Philip Nathan features a modern interpretation of Britannia, the ancient Roman protector of Britain. On the reverse, Britannia holds a shield with the Union Jack and a trident. The obverse depicts either Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III, depending on the year of issue, with an intricate patterned background.

Since 2021, the Britannia has incorporated advanced security features. A laser-engraved element on the reverse changes from a trident to a padlock depending on the viewing angle. The background contains fine waves and line patterns, creating a moving effect that symbolises the United Kingdom’s maritime legacy.
