3. Where is gold found?

Although gold has been found all over the world, the concentrations vary greatly from area to area. In Europe, there is almost no gold that can be extracted in an economically profitable way, but in other parts of the world there is. A lot of gold is found in North America and in various South American countries, but also in Australia, Russia, China, Indonesia and in various South American countries. On the African continent, South Africa has produced by far the most gold. The gold mines there are slowly starting to be depleted, while production in other African countries such as Mali and Burkina Faso is being ramped up. At the moment, China has the largest gold production, in 2014 the mines in this country extracted more than 400 tons of gold from the ground. Historically, most of the gold has been sourced from South Africa, hence the popularity of the gold Krugerrand.
