The Platinum Maple Leaf is the official platinum bullion coin of Canada. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1988, it is struck from exceptionally pure 999.5 platinum. Each coin contains exactly one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of fine platinum and is globally recognized and traded.
The platinum bullion coin has a nominal face value of 50 Canadian dollars, but its actual value is based on the platinum price and is significantly higher. Like the gold and silver Maple Leaf coins, the platinum version features the iconic Canadian maple leaf. Thanks to its distinctive design, it is a favorite among investors worldwide and easy to trade.
These coins have been sourced from the secondary market and were minted between 1988 and 2024. From an investment perspective, these earlier years are particularly attractive, as they are often priced lower than the newest 2025 issue that comes directly from the mint. In addition, these coins were purchased from private sellers and have previously been in circulation, meaning we are not required to charge 21% VAT. When reselling, you will receive the same buyback price for all years of the Platinum Maple Leaf coin.
This coin is not always available, and when we do acquire one, it often sells quickly. If you still wish to invest in physical platinum, consider our precious metals account and purchase platinum per gram with VAT-free insured storage in Switzerland. You can buy physical platinum per gram at the most competitive price and easily manage your holdings through the Holland Gold app.
The obverse of the Platinum Maple Leaf features the portrait of the British monarch — Queen Elizabeth II (coins from 1988–2023) or King Charles III (2023–present). The obverse also displays the nominal face value of 50 dollars and the year of issue. The reverse bears the inscriptions “Canada,” the purity of 99.95%, and the weight of one troy ounce of fine platinum. It also includes the words “Fine Platinum / Platine Pur” in English and French, the two official languages of Canada. Most prominently, the reverse displays the iconic maple leaf — Canada’s national symbol since the 1700s, representing the country’s natural heritage. The eleven points on the leaf have no official meaning, though it is often said they represent the ten provinces and the federal government.
The Platinum Maple Leaf was first introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988. Thanks to its recognizable design and high purity, it was an immediate success. From 2003 to 2009, no Platinum Maple Leaf coins were minted, but production resumed afterward, and the coin has remained a popular choice among platinum investors ever since.
