In 2011, Armenia introduced its own collection of silver coins, the Noah's Ark. These silver investment coins have a purity of 99.9% and are produced by the German smelter Geiger Edelmetalle GmbH on behalf of Armenia. There are no less than seven different sizes of this coin, all of which are minted in a limited edition.
The design of the Noah's Ark comes from the Armenian artist Eduard Kurghinyan and refers to the story from Genesis 8.4 of the Bible. The Noah's Ark is a ship that has been washed away to the mountains by the great flood. There the ship ran aground in the mountains of Ararat. On the obverse of the coin is a coat of arms, the year in which the coin was minted, the face value, the weight and the purity of the coin. At the bottom it says "Republic of Armenia". The reverse of the coin depicts the Noah's Ark, surrounded by waves with the Ararat Mountains in the background. In the foreground a dove adorns an olive branch.
The mintage of the Noah's Ark is limited to 2 million per year for the 1/4 and 1/2 troy ounce coins, 8 million for the 1 troy ounce Noah's Ark and up to 500,000 copies for the larger coins weighing 5 or 10 troy ounces and 1 or 5 kilograms.
