In this episode, Robert Snijder van Wissenkerke talks to political scientist Sander Boon of Geotrendlines. Sander describes how, after the abandonment of the gold standard, government bonds have played an increasingly important role as collateral in Western economies in recent decades. According to Sander, a kind of merger has arisen between governments and privileged companies, for example from the banking sector. This leads to privatized profits and socialized losses. This is also reflected in an ever-widening gap between rich and poor. One should not make the mistake of thinking that this is a capitalist system. According to Sander, real capitalism would lead to a fairer system.
We discuss this phenomenon in the light of current events. Can Milei live up to expectations and pull Argentina out of the doldrums? Is there a turnaround going on in Europe because of Wilders' election victory in the Netherlands and the rise of flank parties in European politics? And how should we view the conflict between Texas and the federal state in the U.S. over border control with Mexico? Will this lead to a major internal conflict or even to the secession of a number of states?
