The Dutch Central Bank wants to move its gold stock to Soesterberg Air Base near Zeist. In addition to the precious metal, the management and logistics of the banknotes and coins must also be moved to the airbase.
In a press release DNB writes that this decision was taken for security reasons. The presence of the banknote company and the gold vault requires very high security measures, which is difficult to combine with the current location in the heart of Amsterdam.
Following the example of many other central banks, DNB will also house its gold reserves in a military base in the future, where security can be better guaranteed and where transports to and from the vault are easier to secure.
The actual relocation of the gold (about 31% of the total gold stock of 612 tons is in Amsterdam) and the money has yet to take place. First, the Dutch Central Bank and the Ministry of Defence will work out a plan for a new complex to be built at the airbase, complete with a moat and permanent security.
This new 'Cash Centre' is expected to be ready for use in 2022. From that moment on, the money transports to and from banks will be carried out via the defence site in Zeist. The presence of an airstrip on the site itself also makes it easier to transport gold or banknotes to and from foreign countries.
The public desk at the DNB head office on Frederiksplein will remain open to visitors. Among other things, you can exchange old guilder banknotes and exchange worn and damaged euro banknotes.
