The Krugerrand is the oldest and best-known official investment coin that contains exactly 1 troy ounce of pure silver. The gold coin was first minted in 1967 and is now also available in silver.
The gold Krugerrand, which is the most widely circulated next to the gold Maple Leaf, is now also available in silver.
Where does the name come from?
The name is derived from the two words Kruger and the edge. Paul Kruger, former president, lived in 1825 - 1904. He was a South African politician and military commander in the Boer War, a war of independence from the British. Among white South Africans, he was affectionately known as "Uncle Paul". Rand is the name of the South African currency and also the abbreviation for the Witwatersrand, a very gold-rich area in the former Transvaal province. Most of the gold used for the gold coins comes from the Witwatersrand area. So this name is anything but a coincidence.
