Niue Athene Owl 1 troy ounce silver coin

The Niue Athena Owl 1 troy ounce silver coin is inspired by the ancient Athenian Owl Tetradrachm, one of the most influential coins in history. First minted more than 2,500 years ago, it served as an international trade currency from Egypt to India. The modern design remains remarkably faithful to the original, making it both a fine investment in silver and a tribute to the glory of classical Athens.

Each Athena Owl coin contains 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver and is issued by the island nation of Niue, located in the South Pacific about 2,400 kilometers northeast of New Zealand. Although Niue is self-governing, its citizens are New Zealand nationals, and the coin is minted by the New Zealand Mint — ensuring premium quality and global tradability.

These coins are sourced from the secondary market and have previously circulated, meaning they can be sold without the addition of 21% VAT — a significant advantage for private investors.

Design

The Athena Owl is admired for its beautiful design and practical stackable structure. The coin’s grooved edges allow it to be neatly stacked, earning it the nickname “stackable coin.” The obverse features the owl of Athens — a symbol of wisdom, strength and insight — along with the letters AOE, representing Alethia Orno Eternia, meaning “Truth, Honour and Forever.” The reverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the face value of 2 New Zealand dollars.

Security Features

The Niue Silver Owl incorporates several advanced anti-counterfeiting details. It features fine radial lines, a sharply detailed relief of the owl with an olive branch and crescent moon, and a precision-engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reeded edge and exact weight of 31.103 grams of 99.9% pure silver make any irregularity immediately detectable.

Silver also offers protection in times of inflation

People think of silver as the poor man's gold, which is absolutely the wrong way to look at it. Gold has the most monetary character, but silver moves in times when a financial system is under pressure, at least as much as gold.

The growing shortage of silver offers opportunities. Silver is scarce. Roughly 50% of the demand for silver comes from industry, especially for applications in solar panels and electric cars. Due to the energy transition, this demand is rising rapidly.
