Taxed with 21% VATThe Austrian Philharmonic coin is Austria’s official platinum bullion coin. Issued by the Austrian Mint, it is struck in 999.5 fine platinum and contains exactly one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure platinum. The coin is globally recognized and highly tradable. Following the introduction of the gold version in 1989 and the silver version in 2008, the platinum coin was launched in 2016 by Münze Österreich. With this addition, the mint expanded its renowned Philharmonic series with a premium-quality platinum coin featuring the same timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship.
The coin has a nominal face value of 100 euros and shares the same world-famous design as its gold and silver counterparts. It is named after the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which has been a symbol of musical excellence and tradition since its founding in 1842.
Note: Under current legislation, newly minted platinum coins are subject to 21% VAT. Business buyers can reclaim this VAT, but private investors cannot. For private investors, it may therefore be more attractive to buy VAT-free platinum — specifically, “mixed year” coins. These coins have been purchased from private sellers and were previously in circulation, meaning no VAT needs to be charged.
The 1 troy ounce platinum coin features the same design as the gold and silver Philharmonic bullion coins. Münze Österreich emphasizes the same superior finish and purity for the platinum version. The obverse of the 2025 Platinum Philharmonic displays the coin’s weight (1 troy ounce), year of issue, face value of 100 euros, and the image of the Great Organ of the Vienna Musikverein, along with the text “Republik Österreich.” The reverse shows the inscription “Wiener Philharmoniker” and a beautifully arranged set of orchestral instruments: a Vienna horn, a bassoon, a harp, a cello, and four violins. The design was created by Thomas Pesendorfer in 1989 for the original gold coin and was adopted for the platinum version in 2016.
Fun fact: The platinum Philharmonic has the same diameter as its gold and silver counterparts — 37 millimetres. However, because each metal has a different density, the coins vary in thickness. Platinum has the highest density, making the coin the thinnest of the three at just 1.4 millimetres, compared to 2 millimetres for gold and 3 millimetres for silver.
