The 50 Pesos Mexico Centenario is one of the most impressive gold bullion coins in our range. With a fine gold content of 37.5 grams and a total weight of 41.67 grams, this coin contains significantly more gold than most standard 1 troy ounce bullion coins (31.1 grams). The Centenario is struck in 21.6 karat gold (90% gold), with the remaining 10% made up of copper. This not only makes the coin durable, but also gives it its distinctive warm gold tone. Combined with a sharp premium and strong tradability, the Centenario is widely regarded as an attractive and reliable investment in physical gold.
The coin has a diameter of approximately 37 mm, comparable to coins such as the Philharmonic, but it is clearly thicker and heavier, giving it a solid and robust feel in hand. The 50 Pesos Centenario was first issued in 1921 to mark the centenary of Mexican independence and was struck regularly up to 1947. Official restrikes followed in the period 1949–1972, with all coins bearing the date 1947. Thanks to its high gold content, striking size and rich historical background, the Centenario has become a beloved classic among both investors and collectors.
The 50 Pesos Mexico Centenario was issued to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Mexican independence and is among the most gold-rich circulation coins ever struck. The obverse features the iconic Ángel de la Independencia: a winged victory holding a laurel wreath and a broken chain, both symbols of freedom. In the background, the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl are depicted. On either side of the design are two dates, referring respectively to Mexico’s independence (1821) and the official issue year of the coin.
The reverse shows Mexico’s national coat of arms: an eagle with a snake in its beak, perched on a cactus. Along the rim appears the text “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS”, Mexico’s official state name. The Centenario is made of 90% gold (21.6 karat), has a total weight of 41.67 grams of which 37.5 grams is pure gold, and a diameter of approximately 37 mm. This makes it clearly larger and thicker than most 1 troy ounce bullion coins, with an exceptionally substantial, weighty feel.
The 50 Pesos Centenario was first struck in 1921 and issued regularly until 1947. Because of its high intrinsic gold value, the coin was relatively early on used less as a means of payment and more often kept for its gold content. In the period 1949–1972, official restrikes were produced, with all coins carrying the date 1947. Thanks to its remarkable gold weight, instantly recognisable design and strong liquidity, the Centenario is considered a cherished classic among both investors and collectors.
