10 Francs France

The French 10 franc gold coin is the smaller counterpart of the 20 franc and follows exactly the same classical coin standard from the era of Napoleon I. The coin is composed of 90% gold (21.6 carat) and contains 2.905 grams of pure gold, with a total weight of 3.225 grams. Thanks to its compact size and international recognition, the French 10 Franc is a low-threshold option for both beginning and experienced investors.

The 10 franc gold coin was issued as a circulation coin during the 19th and early 20th centuries and, like the 20 franc, represents a tangible part of French monetary history. Depending on availability, we supply various types, including Napoleon issues and the Gallic Rooster (Le Coq). The designs feature a distinctive historical style that makes this coin popular among both collectors and investors. The year of issue you receive cannot be determined in advance.

Design

The design of the French 10 franc gold coin was first introduced in 1803 under Napoleon I, just like the 20 franc. Over the years, the obverse changed with each new ruler, featuring portraits of figures such as Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis-Philippe I and Napoleon III. During these periods, the reverse displayed a variety of motifs, ranging from imperial coats of arms to an eagle or a denomination set within a wreath.

In 1899, the French Republic introduced a uniform design with Marianne on the obverse and the Gallic Rooster on the reverse, surrounded by the motto Liberté – Égalité – Fraternité. This design remained in use until 1914 and is today one of the most recognizable types within the series.

Despite the variation in portraits and symbolism, the technical specifications always remained exactly the same. Due to the standardization of the Latin Monetary Union, the 10 franc always weighs 3.225 grams, contains 2.905 grams of pure gold and has a diameter proportional to that of the 20 franc. The coins were struck at multiple French mints, but thanks to these fixed standards they are fully interchangeable and highly tradable internationally.

Why buy gold at Holland Gold?

Gold offers protection in times of inflation
Gold offers protection in times of inflation
In the long term, gold retains its value, while currencies lose a lot of purchasing power. An example of the value retention of gold is that 2,000 years ago you could buy a tailor-made suit for one gold coin and that is still the case today.

Gold is an insurance against a systemic risk
The gold reserves at central banks act as the backing of a money system. According to DNB, gold is an 'anchor of trust': "If the entire financial system collapses, the gold supply provides collateral to start over."

Gold strengthens the portfolio through its long-term returns and diversification. Its traditional role as a safe haven means that gold is an asset in times of crisis, moving in the opposite direction to the rest of the portfolio.
