For years, investing in stones was the way to secure wealth, but those days seem to have been left behind us with a brutal shock. New regulation of mid-market rental as a result of Huge de Jonge's Affordable Rent Act and erratic changes in wealth tax (box 3) make home rental unprofitable, and investors will even have to invest in some homes. More and more landlords are selling homes as soon as they become available for rent, leading to a real sell-off wave. Many private real estate investors are therefore looking at alternatives, in which gold and precious metals occupy a unique position.
"Professional investors like certainty. Unclear policy from the government means that investing in real estate no longer offers this certainty. As a result, we notice that more and more people are turning to precious metals," says Paul Buitink, director of Holland Gold.
Gold has undergone a spectacular development in value over the past few decades. If you compare this with real estate, for example, the following is striking: if the average house value in 2000 was €172,050, it had risen to €416,153 in 2023, a growth of 242%. If you compare this to gold, a kilo of gold in the year 2000 still cost €8804, but at the end of 2023 it was €60,538, a growth of 688%! At the time of writing, the Gold price has already passed the 69,000 euro mark.
Like real estate, precious metals are one of the few investments and commodities that one can physically own; even if your gold or silver is stored at one of our vaults in the Netherlands, Switzerland or Singapore, these are always physical bars and coins. In addition, compared to stones, owning precious metals involves much less cost. Gold and silver have a degree of simplicity in contrast to real estate where tenants, owners' associations, brokers and contractors can sometimes cause headaches.
