Taxed with 21% VATThe 2025 1 troy ounce Silver Philharmonic, produced by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich), is the most recognized and best-selling European silver investment coin. First introduced in 2008 following the success of the gold version, the Silver Philharmonic is internationally known for its iconic design and is especially popular among investors in Germany, Switzerland and the United States.
With a purity of 99.9% fine silver, the coin is highly sought after for its low premium and competitive price, as it is produced in large quantities. Year after year, the Philharmonic ranks among the world’s best-selling 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) silver coins and remains a favorite among Holland Gold customers.
The coin honors the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1842 and considered one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, alongside the Berlin Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Its grand organ, an iconic symbol of the orchestra, is featured on the obverse of the coin.
Under EU regulations, newly minted coins are subject to 21% VAT. Business customers can reclaim this VAT, but private investors cannot. For individuals, an attractive alternative may be the various years Philharmonics, which are pre-owned and VAT-exempt.
The Austrian Mint is renowned for its exceptional production quality and precision. The obverse of the 2025 Silver Philharmonic displays the weight (1 troy ounce), face value of €1.50, the grand organ of the Vienna Philharmonic and the inscription ‘Republik Österreich’. The reverse features the text ‘Wiener Philharmoniker’ along with a Vienna horn, bassoon, harp, cello and four violins. The design, created by Thomas Pesendorfer in 1989 for the gold Philharmonic, was adapted for silver in 2008.
Unlike the gold Philharmonic, the edge of the silver coin is smooth rather than reeded. With a diameter of 37 millimeters, it is slightly thicker and sturdier than most other 1 oz silver coins.
Fun fact: the Silver Philharmonic shares the same 37 millimeter diameter as its gold counterpart. Because silver is less dense than gold, the coin is thicker—3 millimeters compared to 2 millimeters for the gold version.
