Britannia 1 troy ounce platinum coin 2025

The platinum Britannia 1 troy ounce 2025 coin is a beautifully designed bullion coin made of 31.1 grams of 99.95% pure platinum. The coins are newly minted by the Royal Mint of Great Britain and delivered in soft plastic sachet or per tube of 10 pieces.

Design and security features

The reverse depicts the figure of Britannia, the personification of Great Britain dating back to Roman antiquity. She symbolises Britain's strength and integrity. Since 2021, three impressive security features have been added, which make it incredibly difficult fort he coins to be replicated. On the reverse a hologram is engraved on the lower left, just below the goddess Britannia. Depending on the angle at which the coin is viewed, a podlock or a trident will appear. Secondly, a microtext  is engraved with the text ‘Decus et Tutamen’ which can be translated as both ‘glory and defence’ and ‘decoration and safeguard’. The inscription dates back to the 17th century and has been struck on British coins ever since. In addition the platina troy ounce Britannia features a wave pattern with micro-details, creating a dynamic visual effect. These waves refer to the UK's maritime history. On the obverse side of the coin, we see the portrait of King Charles III with an equally complex pattern in the background.

Platinum

Platinum is a very rare precious metal. Its annual extraction rate is 6% of total gold mining and less than 1% of silver mining. Platinum, like silver, is used in industry like production of cars and trucks (nearly 40% of demand comes from autocatlysts filtering harmfull emissions), jewellery (predominantly China) and medicine. The value of this rare precious metal depends on the fluctuations in industrial demand as well as on investor demand for (physical) platinum.

VAT and Platinum

As of 1st of January 2025 there is a 21% VAT applicable to newly minted coins. When acquiring the platinum coins through your business or holding it might be possible to reclaim the VAT. Always consult with your own advisors to explore further possibilities. For private investors it might also be fitting to look at platinum coins that have been in circulation, as the platina value of these coins is VAT-exempt. You can find these coins designated with ‘various years’.
