The American Gold Eagle 2025 is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. The coin contains 31.103 grams (1 troy ounce) of fine gold. Its total weight is slightly higher at 33.94 grams, due to the addition of small amounts of silver and copper. This alloy makes the coin more durable and less prone to scratches than 24-karat gold coins. Because the American Eagle contains exactly 1 troy ounce of gold, its value is comparable to 1-ounce 24-karat coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Philharmoniker.
The 2025 issue is a Type 2 coin, featuring the updated design introduced in 2021. The coin combines a highly recognisable appearance with excellent bullion quality. The Golden Eagle is popular worldwide thanks to the strict production standards of the United States Mint, founded in 1792 and producer of the American Eagle series since 1986. Its reputation and iconic design make the coin widely trusted both inside and outside the United States.
The American Eagle 2025 has a fineness of 916.7 (22 karats) and contains exactly 31.103 grams of fine gold. The alloy consists of 91.67% gold, 3% silver and 5.33% copper, giving the coin a subtle reddish hue and increased resistance to wear.
The obverse features “Lady Liberty”, holding a torch in her right hand (symbolising freedom) and an olive branch in her left (symbolising peace). The year of issue also appears on this side. The artwork is based on the historic Saint-Gaudens designs.
The reverse depicts a detailed close-up of an eagle — the “Type 2 Eagle Portrait” designed by Jennie Norris, introduced in 2021. The inscriptions include the coin’s weight, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (“out of many, one”) and the nominal value of 50 dollars. The coin is legal tender in the United States.
The United States Mint operates six facilities, with its headquarters in Washington D.C. Several locations offer guided tours for visitors interested in the minting process.
