Design

The Britannia gold coin was first introduced in 1987 and has since become one of the most sought-after bullion coins both in the United Kingdom and internationally. Coins minted between 1987 and 2012 contained 22 carat gold, while coins from 2013 onwards are made of 24 carat gold. We only offer the 24 carat issues. The design by Philip Nathan depicts Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, originally featured on Roman coins as early as 119 AD. On the reverse, she holds a shield bearing the Union Jack and a trident in her other hand. The obverse features a portrait of King Charles or Queen Elizabeth, set against a detailed background pattern.

Unique Security Features

Since 2021, the Britannia has incorporated innovative anti-counterfeit features. Beneath the figure of Britannia is a laser-engraved element that changes from a padlock to a trident depending on the viewing angle. The background displays fine lines and wave-like textures that give the impression of moving water, symbolizing Britain’s maritime heritage. A micro-engraved inscription provides both decoration and additional protection, while Britannia’s shield bears the Union Jack with intricate detailing.
