Design

The Britannia gold coin was first introduced in 1987 and has since become one of the most sought-after bullion coins both in the United Kingdom and internationally. The design by Philip Nathan depicts Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, originally featured on Roman coins as early as 119 AD. On the reverse, she holds a shield bearing the Union Jack and a trident in her other hand.
