American Eagle 2026 1 troy ounce gold coin

The American Eagle 2026 is the official gold bullion coin of the United States and contains 1 troy ounce of fine gold, equivalent to 31.1 grams of pure gold. The year 2026 is a special year for the gold Eagle coin, marking both the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 40th anniversary of the coin itself.

One troy ounce is the standard unit of weight for precious metals. The total weight is 33.93 grams, however, because 3% silver and 5.33% copper are added to the gold. This gives the coin a fineness of 916.7/1000, equivalent to 22 carats. The alloy makes the surface harder than that of a 24-carat coin. At the same time, the amount of gold in the coin remains the same as in any other 1 troy ounce gold coin.

The Gold American Eagle has been minted by the United States Mint since 1986 under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and is one of the most widely traded gold bullion coins in the world.

Of the four sizes, this is the largest. The coin is also available in ½, ¼ and 1/10 troy ounce weights. This means that the 1 troy ounce coin has the lowest product premium per gram within the American Eagle 2026 series. Smaller gold coin sizes, on the other hand, can be sold more easily in smaller increments later. You can find all weights on our page with the full range of American Eagle gold coins.

Design of the American Eagle 2026 gold coin

The alloy of 91.67% gold, 3% silver and 5.33% copper gives the coin a slightly reddish hue. The American Eagle measures 32.70 mm in diameter and is 2.87 mm thick.

The obverse features Lady Liberty holding a torch (freedom) and an olive branch (peace), based on the 1907 design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The year 2026 appears on this side, without the privy mark used on the collector editions. The reverse features the head of an American bald eagle. This eagle design is the Type 2 portrait by Jennie Norris, in use since 2021, together with IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM ("out of many, one") and the face value of 50 dollars. The reeded edge has an interruption in a different position each year as an anti-counterfeiting feature.

Gold offers protection in times of inflation
Gold offers protection in times of inflation
In the long term, gold retains its value, while currencies lose a lot of purchasing power. An example of the value retention of gold is that 2,000 years ago you could buy a tailor-made suit for one gold coin and that is still the case today.

The gold reserves at central banks act as the backing of a money system. According to DNB, gold is an 'anchor of trust': "If the entire financial system collapses, the gold supply provides collateral to start over."

Gold strengthens the portfolio through its long-term returns and diversification. Its traditional role as a safe haven means that gold is an asset in times of crisis, moving in the opposite direction to the rest of the portfolio.
