The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. Each coin contains 31.103 grams, or exactly 1 troy ounce of pure gold. The total weight is slightly higher at 33.94 grams, as the coin also includes small amounts of silver and copper. This alloy makes the coin more durable and less prone to scratches than 24-carat gold coins. Since the American Eagle contains a full troy ounce of gold, its intrinsic value equals that of other 1 troy ounce 24-carat coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Philharmonic.
The coin is highly popular thanks to the strict quality standards of the United States Mint. Established in 1792, the U.S. Mint first issued the American Eagle in 1986. Because of its outstanding reputation and iconic design, the coin is cherished by investors both in the U.S. and worldwide. These coins are purchased from the secondary market and come from various years between 1986 and 2024.
The United States Mint is among the most respected mints in the world, known for its consistently high-quality coinage. In addition to bullion coins, the Mint also produces circulating coins, commemorative issues, and official medals for government use.
The American Eagle 1 troy ounce gold coin has a fineness of 916.7 gold, equivalent to 22 carats. It contains 31.103 grams of pure gold (1 troy ounce) and consists of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. This alloy gives the coin a slight reddish hue and provides greater resistance to wear and scratches.
The obverse features “Lady Liberty” holding a torch in her right hand, symbolizing freedom, and an olive branch in her left hand, symbolizing peace. The design is inspired by the historic Saint-Gaudens coins. The reverse depicts a flying American bald eagle approaching its nest, designed by Miley Busiek. Since 2021, a new reverse design by Jennie Norris shows a detailed close-up of an eagle’s head, while the obverse retains a refined version of Lady Liberty. Both designs include the gold weight (1 troy ounce) and the face value of fifty dollars, confirming the coin’s legal tender status in the United States.
The United States Mint operates six facilities, with its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Visitors to the U.S. can tour select facilities to witness the minting process firsthand.
