Kangaroo 1 troy ounce platinum coin - various years

The Kangaroo 1 troy ounce platinum coin weighs 31.1 grams and contains 99.95% pure platinum. Minted by the world-renowned Perth Mint since 2018, this 1 oz platinum bullion coin stands out for its intricate design and unique security feature: a micro-laser engraved letter “A,” visible only under magnification within one of the letters of “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO.” This makes counterfeiting virtually impossible. Each coin is delivered in a hard, airtight plastic capsule for optimal protection.

The coin has a nominal face value of 100 Australian dollars, although its actual value is based on the platinum spot price and is significantly higher. Featuring the iconic leaping kangaroo — also seen on the 1 oz silver coin — the Platinum Kangaroo is recognized worldwide and highly sought after by investors for its liquidity and purity.

These coins have been sourced from the secondary market and were minted between 2018 and 2024. From an investment perspective, these earlier years are particularly attractive, as they are priced lower than the newest 2025 issue direct from the mint. Additionally, since these coins were purchased from private sellers and have previously been in circulation, no 21% VAT is charged. Upon resale, all years of the Platinum Kangaroo coin receive the same buyback price.

This coin is not always available, and when we do acquire one, it often sells quickly. If you still wish to invest in physical platinum, consider our precious metals account and buy platinum per gram with insured VAT-free storage in Switzerland. You can invest at the most competitive price and easily manage your holdings via the Holland Gold app.

Design

The kangaroo depicted on the obverse of the Platinum Kangaroo coin is Australia’s national symbol. Because of its powerful legs and long tail, the kangaroo can only move forward, symbolizing Australia’s continual progress. This side of the coin also features the inscriptions “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO,” the year of issue, and “1 oz 999.5 PLATINUM.” The reverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (2018–2023) or King Charles III (2024–2025). Unlike Elizabeth, King Charles faces left. Coins depicting Elizabeth bear the designer’s initials “IRB” (Ian Rank-Broadley) or “JC” (Jody Clark), while those featuring King Charles are signed “DT” for designer Dan Thorne. The obverse also shows the nominal value of 100 Australian dollars, which is naturally far below the intrinsic platinum value of the coin.

Security Features

To the right of the kangaroo, within the outer ring, a small letter “P” is visible — the Perth Mint’s mintmark and a sign of authenticity. Another security feature is the micro-laser engraved letter “A,” visible only under magnification within one of the letters of “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO.” The placement of this feature varies from year to year, further enhancing the coin’s security.

Why buy platinum at Holland Gold?

Platinum is a scarce resource
Platinum is a scarce resource

All the mined platinum will hardly fill an average living room. Due to this scarcity, prices are more volatile and less attractive to casual investors. If you have high expectations specifically for platinum, it is interesting to buy this metal.

Platinum is a unique resource
Platinum is a unique resource
Platinum is used by the automotive industry to make catalytic converters. Platinum is also used in jewelry. Many analysts believe that platinum can gradually replace the cheaper  palladium due to its lower cost and ability to play much the same role as palladium.
Platinum is a mainstay in the investment portfolio

Research shows that platinum retains its economic value over time and is therefore a wise investment. Thanks to its industrial value, platinum offers admirable resistance to declines in the precious metals market.
