Taxed with 21% VATThe 2025 1 troy ounce Silver Krugerrand is the silver counterpart of the world-famous Gold Krugerrand. Containing 31.1 grams (1 troy ounce) of 99.9% pure silver, it features the iconic portrait of Paul Kruger on the obverse and the springbok antelope on the reverse. Known for its timeless design, exceptional quality and competitive price, the Silver Krugerrand remains one of the most popular silver bullion coins among investors worldwide.
First introduced in 2017 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand, the Silver Krugerrand has since been issued annually by the South African Mint. This gave the legendary bullion coin a long-awaited silver version, which has rapidly gained recognition on the global precious metals market and is a top choice among Holland Gold customers.
Under current regulations, new coins are subject to 21% VAT. Business customers can reclaim this VAT, while private investors cannot. For individual buyers, a more attractive option may be the VAT-free Silver Krugerrand various years. These coins have been previously owned and traded, allowing them to be sold VAT-free at a more favorable price.
The Silver Krugerrand was first struck in 2017 by the South African Mint, exactly 50 years after the introduction of the famous gold version in 1967. Each coin contains 31.1 grams (1 troy ounce) of 99.9% pure silver.
The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former South African president who played a significant role during the Boer Wars against the British Empire. The inscriptions read “South Africa” and “Suid-Afrika” in English and Afrikaans. The reverse side displays South Africa’s national symbol — the springbok antelope — along with the year of issue and the weight: 1 troy ounce fine silver. The coin has a reeded edge. The portrait of Paul Kruger was designed by Otto Schulz, and the reverse design by Coert Steynberg.
The name “Krugerrand” combines “Kruger” and “rand,” the South African currency. The word “rand” is derived from “Witwatersrand,” a region in the former Transvaal province rich in gold and silver deposits. Much of the silver used to mint Krugerrand coins originates from this area.
The coin has a nominal face value of 1 South African rand, but its true value is determined by the silver price. The detailed engraving of both Paul Kruger and the springbok makes counterfeiting virtually impossible.
